Please have your child bring in 1 or 2 pictures from his or her past by Friday, April 9th. Calling all Gardeners - we need help!

We had a very productive day in our Old Stevenson Garden. There was a small but tireless work force. Of course seven or eight Burroughs High School kids were there as well as a wonderful new Stevenson ally / neighbor, George Chatigny. He and his wife Teresa live down the street on Lima. But the big bonus was Jennifer and Rob Hughes. They have two daughters at Stevenson - Phoebe in Mrs. Hill's class and Lily in Mrs. Anderson's. Let me tell ya, the Hughes family are gardeners! Yeah! We pulled out the winter crops and just about cleaned up all of the twenty beds in preparation for a Spring planting. There were still plenty of cabbage, beets, carrots and some broccoli so everybody went home pretty happy.

What I would like to ask you lovely Room Rep Ladies to do is help us

spread the word about our wonderful Garden. There are two messages

we'd like to get out there to our Stevenson Community.

#1 - "Green Team Garden News - Please come join us this Sat., April

10th from 9 am - 11 am in the Stevenson Garden for Phase 2 of our

Spring Clean-up and Planting. It will be light work, but we could use

your help. You can enter the Stevenson campus from the California

Street gate. Bring your work clothes, sunscreen and a hat - we have

plenty of gloves. Your kids will have a great time, too, so bring them

along!"

#2 - "We are looking for a few volunteers to help us during school

hours the week of April 12th. Miss Ginnetti thinks it is a great idea to let the kids come out to the Garden during the afternoons that week to help us plant. They will be testing in the mornings so the Garden will be welcomed change of pace. Miss G has spoken to the teachers and they have already agreed to help facilitate this plan. So we need to find six or seven willing volunteers to come out to the Garden between 12:30 and 3 pm to help supervise the kids as we plant the remainder of the Garden.

Stevenson Rocks! is Families For Stevenson's annual fundraiser. Held each spring (this year it will be on Friday, May 7th), the event features an impressive silent auction, a live concert, games, food, shopping, and activities for members of the whole family. This year, we're going retro - 50s style and we're even having a car show!

Each year we ask our families to donate items to put into classroom baskets which will be auctioned off on the night. Each grade level is asked to provide items with a particular theme. You can find details of your grade's theme and suggested donations on the website http://stevensonpirates.net/rocks/classroom-baskets/ . These baskets are always very popular, and your donation will make a real difference. With the budget crisis threatening our music and PE teachers, FFS' mission to provide arts to all our students is more important than ever.

our themes are:

“Splish Splash” – Pool Party themed basket. Pool toys, floating drink holder, floating ipod dock, sun screen, adult drink mixes.
“Summer Time Blues” - Beach Party themed basket. Beach umbrella, picnic basket, beach towels, Frisbee, portable ipod dock, sun screen, visors, large blanket, sun glasses, shovels, lip balm, disposable camera, gift cards from Target, Walmart, etc…

Please turn in your donation by April 16th.

Friday, March 12th, will be a "read-in" day - ok for the kids to bring a small blanket or a beach towel and a favorite small stuffed animal. The students will be able to layout their blankets/towels on the floor or grass area (if the weather permits) and read or listen to another person read.

Stevenson's Talent Show opening night is this Friday, March 5th. All our students have worked incredibly hard on their acts and it is sure to be a wonderful show. We hope that you and your children will be able to attend and show your support. There are two shows - Friday March 5th at 7.00pm and Saturday March 6th at 3.00pm.

Field Trip to the Zoo!

I don't know about your children, but Elizabeth got dressed so fast this morning I thought she was on her way to a fire! The kids had a blast at the zoo - and you should be proud of them, they all did a fantastic job listening to the various parents who came to help.

You may have noticed that your kids came home wired up and tired. We had a great trip to the zoo today. Ask them to tell you all about it. They rode on the school bus - 4 times today!

They had little notebooks with animals in them. We walked all over the zoo to find the animals and count how many of each animal was in the enclosure.

At noon, the kids got back on the bus and we left the zoo and had lunch and played at Verdugo Park.

Then it was back on the bus and back to school.

Barnes & Noble Book Fair Extended!!!

Thank you to all those families who joined us for our Barnes & Noble Book Fair and Dine out days. Story Time & Book Signing with Children’s Author George McClements was a blast (and the kids enjoyed it too!)!!

Unfortunately we fell short of our fundraising goal so Barnes & Noble have been kind enough to extend the Book Fair through this Sunday, Feb 14th!

Please help us reach our goal of an additional $2000 in sales so Stevenson Elementary will receive an additional 5% contribution for this fundraiser!

There are lots of great excuses to shop:

Give your child’s teacher a gift: The Teacher’s Wish List Board is located in the children’s book area
Buy your sweetie a book for Valentine’s Day

Field Trip to the Zoo

Here is some information about the field trip . . . .

Departure: all students will need to be at school by 8:30 am on Thursday February 11, 2010
WE will be departing for our field stip from Stevenson Elementary by 9:00 a.m. If you are a chaperone, please arrive with your child at 8:30 a.m. so I can assure transportation and assign groupings.

Lunch: If you need a sack lunch from the cafeteria, please let Mrs. Almeida know by Tuesday, February 9th If you wanted a cafeteria lunch and you do not have money in your school lunch account, you will need to send $2.50. otherwise please pack your chyild a cold lunch in a disposible bag. if you send a thermos with water, your child will need to be responsible for it the entire day.

Arrival/pick up: we will return to Stevenson by 1:15 pm. Please pick up your child at the gate at 1:33.

Valentine's Day Information & At-Home Project

The PTA organizes a Valentine's party which will be held at lunchtime on Friday Feb. 12

At home project: have your child bring a decorated shoe box to school to collect their Valentines. you can use stickers, wrappijng paper, construction paper, markers, crayons, etc to decorate the box. please make sure your child's name is on the box and return to school by Friday, February 12th.

If you send cards with your child to pass out, PLEASE DO NOT HAVE THEM WRITE THEIR CLASSMATES' names on them - it makes it difficult to pass out.

an extra assignment was sent home on 1/19 - parental (adult) help/supervision required.

each child is to make a collection that will show the number 100. Each child will present his/her project to the class on the 100th day- MONDAY JANUARY 25TH

this project should not be costly. you can use such things as seeds, popcorn, toothpicks, cereal, etc. to make a pattern, chart, graph, picture or design. it must have 100 pieces on it.

use the paper attached to the instructions for this project. if you need another piece, let Mrs. Almeida know.

Soles4Souls donations @ Sport Chalet

The earthquake in Haiti is a reminder just how fragile our world is, and seeing the devastation that has affected so many, we have partnered once again with Soles4Souls to lend a helping hand.

Starting today, all 55 Sport Chalet stores will be accepting gently worn men's, women's and kids shoes until Sunday, January 31.

All the shoes collected will be sent directly to Soles4Souls for distribution to the Haitian people.

Perhaps you can organize a local shoe drive in your community and bring them in... during our last shoe drive... one young man actually went door-to-door in his neighborhood asking for gently worn shoes.

Many of us live with the threat of an earthquake every day, it's only a natural response to want to do something to help... please stop by and drop off one, two, or even three pair of shoes that can help someone in need today.

“Helping Our Own”

Stevenson’s PTA has proudly participated in assembling Holiday Baskets for Burbank families in need. This year, Stevenson has specifically asked the Burbank Coordinating Council the families we adopt to receive Holiday Baskets be chosen from Stevenson. We felt it was important to reach out to our own Stevenson families in these trying times of economic hardships. We also felt that knowing the donations we are asking for were going to our very own students and their families would be very fulfilling and rewarding to all of us at Stevenson.

The Holiday Basket Coordinator from the Burbank Coordinating Council made it very clear we would not be given the names of the families we have adopted. No one at Stevenson will know the identities of the adopted families. There will be a preset drop off point and pick up time and place off campus. The Stevenson families chosen won't even know they are the recipients of Holiday Basket created by Stevenson until the day of the pick up.

The goal of the Holiday Basket program is to provide holiday meals for one full day, breakfast, lunch and dinner, and gifts for each member of the adopted families. Through a food drive and Giving Tree we hope to collect all the necessary items to create each family a Stevenson Holiday Basket unique to that family’s needs.

Food Drive: We ask that you start sending in your non-perishable food donations with your children on Monday, November 23rd. Volunteers will collect donations each day from classrooms until Friday, December 4^th. Suggestions for food items are soups, tuna, can vegetables and fruits, dry cereals, pancake mix, pastas, crackers and peanut butter. Additional items needed are paper goods, and toiletries.

Giving Tree: There will be a poster of a Giving Tree set up at Stevenson. The tree will have paper leaves with the gender, age, and clothing sizes written on each leaf for the 25 adopted family members. The Giving Tree will also be on display during the Holiday Boutique from November 30 to December 3^rd. We ask that you drop by and a pick a leaf of your choice. Please return your Holiday Basket donations by December 11th.

Stevenson's Annual Holiday Boutique is always a favorite of our students. It’s a safe, kid-friendly, affordable “boutique” where kids can shop on their own for parents, grandparents, and friends. “Santa’s Little Helpers” otherwise known as volunteer Moms put a great deal of time and effort into selecting quality yet affordable gifts for our students to choose from. With most gifts priced between $1-$5 this is a great, affordable way for your child to shop for the holidays.

Parents will have an opportunity to prepare a shopping list and budget for their child while volunteer “elves” will help them shop and wrap their gifts in special gift bags.

The children are invited to come to the library, leave their backpacks outside, and do some holiday shopping. We ask that parents wait outside while their kids shop. This way, our students will have the fun of surprising friends and loved ones with secret gifts they have bought themselves.

Refreshments

This year we are adding a little extra something for the families of our holiday shoppers. Holiday Boutique refreshments will be served in the eating area located next to the library/holiday groto. So while your little shopper is off stocking up for Christmas you’ll be able to put your feet up with a hot chocolate.

We will also have a selection of crafts and gift items for those parent who want to do a little holiday shopping themselves. After all why should the kids have all the fun?!

Green Team Meeting Thursday Night

Please let us take this opportunity to tell you about our STEVENSON PTA GREEN TEAM. It’s a simple idea and the time seemed right this year to bring a new sense of awareness and participation in our school’s gardens, recycling and overall sustainability.

So far, we have given the school’s Old Garden some new life – over the last two weeks the kids from almost all the classrooms have jumped in, gotten their hands wonderfully dirty and planted seeds and seedlings! With a little luck, in a month or so we’ll have some fresh veggies to eat.

This week we wanted to ramp up our Green Team efforts and have our first “official” meeting. Since we already have a PTA Association Meeting scheduled for this Thurs., 11/12 at 7 PM, we thought it convenient to try and have a short Green Team meeting at 6 PM the same night.

We will discuss our ideas and goals for the year – the garden projects, recycling, composting. But we also would like to hear from all of you as to what YOU see the Green Team possibly becoming here at Stevenson!

So please come join us this Thurs. 11/12 at 6 PM at Stevenson in Bungalow A - the Parent Resource Room.

Cold or H1N1 Flu?

H1N1 flu is about to be upon us and we need to be on top of information regarding it. Here is a comparison to the normal cold symptoms .

Know the Difference between a Cold and H1N1 Flu Symptoms

Symptom	Cold	H1N1 Flu
Fever	Fever is rare with a cold.	Fever is usually present with the flu in up to 80% of all flu cases. A temperature of 100°F or higher for 3 to 4 days is associated with the H1N1 flu.
Coughing	A hacking, productive (mucus- producing) cough is often present with a cold.	A non-productive (non-mucus producing) cough is usually present with the H1N1 flu (sometimes referred to as dry cough).
Aches	Slight body aches and pains can be part of a cold.	Severe aches and pains are common with the H1N1 flu.
Stuffy Nose	Stuffy nose is commonly present with a cold and typically resolves spontaneously within a week.	Stuffy nose is not commonly present with the H1N1 flu.
Chills	Chills are uncommon with a cold.	60% of people who have the H1N1 flu experience chills.
Tiredness	Tiredness is fairly mild with a cold.	Tiredness is moderate to severe with the H1N1 flu.
Sneezing	Sneezing is commonly present with a cold.	Sneezing is not common with the H1N1 flu.
Sudden Symptoms	Cold symptoms tend to develop over a few days.	The H1N1 flu has a rapid onset within 3-6 hours. The flu hits hard and includes sudden symptoms like high fever, aches and pains.
Headache	A headache is fairly uncommon with a cold.	A headache is very common with the H1N1 flu, present in 80% of flu cases.
Sore Throat	Sore throat is commonly present with a cold.	Sore throat is not commonly present with the H1N1 flu.
Chest Discomfort	Chest discomfort is mild to moderate with a cold.	Chest discomfort is often severe with the H1N1 flu.

The only way to stop the spread of the epidemic is to spread the awareness

Kids' Cake Decorating Contest

there is going to be a cake decorating contest -
the rules . . .

+ Students do the decorating
+ Prepare the cake on a disposable platter
+ drop off the cake before school on Friday Oct. 30th

+ Cakes dropped off after 4 pm will not be judged, but will be on display and donated to the cake walk

Original Works is a school fundraiser. Inside the folders is an artwork made by your child. The company then transfers the art to various objects such as coffee mugs, aprons, hand towels, night lights, mouse pads, the list is in the folder.

I know that many of us are watching every penny these days, but what a great gift for grandma and grandpa - a useful object with their grandchild's art on it.

DON'T FORGET TO RETURN THE ART with your orders - the folders are due back by next Monday, but feel free to send them back on Friday with the homework folders.

Boo Bash

For those who don't know what Boo Bash is, or are new to Stevenson, this is an incredible night of family fun. The kids dress up in their costumes, play carnival type games, enjoy some food and treats.

This year the event will be held on Friday October 30th. Room 9 is in charge of the "Toilet Paper Toss” booth this year.

We still need some more volunteers, so please let Muskan or me know if you can work the booth or help clean up. Anyone able to volunteer PLEASE email me at mdrosen@sbcglobal.net and Muskan and I will find a time slot that works best for you (and allows you to still have fun with your kids!)

Red Ribbon Week

The week of October 19-23 we are observing ‘Red Ribbon Week’ here at our school. Red Ribbon Week is a national awareness campaign that began in 1985 to serve as a vehicle for communities and individuals to take a stand for the hopes and dreams of our children through a commitment to drug prevention and education.

There will be various age appropriate activities going on throughout the week to promote healthy choices and to teach our students about being responsible and safe. This is a good week to have conversations or read books regarding this subject as they will be hearing about it at school and that can open a communication that is sometimes hard to initiate. Here are some age appropriate reading choices on the subject of making good choices, being healthy and resisting peer pressure. Prevent Swine Flu - Good Advice

Dr. Vinay Goyal is an MBBS,DRM,DNB (Intensivist and Thyroid specialist) having clinical experience of over 20 years. He has worked in institutions like Hinduja Hospital , Bombay Hospital , Saifee Hospital , Tata Memorial etc.. Presently, he is heading our Nuclear Medicine Department and Thyroid clinic at Riddhivinayak Cardiac and Critical Centre, Malad (W).

The following message given by him, I feel makes a lot of sense and is important for all to know

The only portals of e ntry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.

While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):

1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications) .

2. "Hands-off-the- face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).

3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected o ne. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.*

5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits).. *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

Back to School Night, homework, & volunteers

It was great to see all the moms and dads at back to school night. I think everyone had at least one parent there - what a turn out.

this was an exciting week, with our kids (and us) getting their first taste of homework. Remember, homework folders come home on Mondays and are to be returned on Fridays.

Volunteeers!
Lana Wilson (Esme's mom) will be helping on Mondays getting the homework out, and Jen Perry can do a couple Fridays a month, but I think we still need volunteers. Please let me know if you will be able to help.
